A good friend and customer of mine, Lisa Zawacki, has a unique designer handbag company called Baixada. It specializes in genuine python and alligator skin handbags. She has recently updated her complete line and you can check it out at the designer handbag collection.
Lisa contacted me two years ago and asked me to produce the zipper pulls for her new line of designer purses. She sent me a design that was in the form of a styleized monkey with genuine gemstone eyes. I have been producing them for her ever since. The color of the gemstone eyes match the colors of the handbags. The sterling silver monkey pulls are a signature of her unique handbag designs.
Lisa also has the monkey design in a custom necklace and cufflinks. The Baixada line also includes unique handmade alligator skin belts. If you have ever wanted a luxury designer handbag, Baixada is the place to find what you are looking for. All the purses are unique and expertly handmade in Spain.

Saturday I went saltwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with my buddy captain Ed. We launched late in the morning from Dauphin Island near the southwest tip of Mobile Bay. The weather was ideal and the seas were between one and three feet. We fished about 15 miles south of Mobile Bay at some underwater structures in around 100 feet of water. These were structures sunk to enhance the fishing in the Gulf and include everything from concrete piramids to old army tanks. The structure we caught most of our fish on was an old barge.
Our first two spots were unproductive so we moved north toward land. The water was exceptionally clear for this time of year. Our third spot was a honey. We anchored and caught fish until almost sunset. Many were too small to keep or some fish were too big and got off. We were fishing primarily for red snapper and grouper and were blessed with a good catch of both. We ended up with four keeper snapper and two nice grouper. We headed back in near dark thankful for a great day of fishing in the Gulf.

This unique custom made pendant is done in 10 karat yellow gold and is set with a designer cut African pietersite stone and five round spessartite (orange) garnets. This pendant is 71mm or 2-5/8 inches tall and the gold weighs 16 grams, so it is a substantial piece. The garnets are 3mm in diameter and the pietersite stone is hand cut by me. Pietersite is a rare form of tigereye and jasper generally found in Africa and China.

Yesterday I went up the Pearl River near Jackson to do a little afternoon bass fishing. It was a beautiful afternoon with light winds and temperatures in the upper 70s. I was fortunate enough to get several good alligator pictures while I was there. I always take my digital camera on my fishing trips because this is a beautiful area and you never know what you will see.
Generally the alligators will keep their distance and tolerate some photography. Of the two animals I saw the larger one was about eight to ten feet long. That's the one on the bank. The one swimming in the water is around five feet long. They are quite plentiful on the Pearl River on the upper end of the Ross Barnette Reservoir which is northeast of Jackson, Mississippi. I did catch one nice bass that I released.

This is a 36X22mm scrimshaw dragon done on mastodon ivory. This ivory comes from the Siberian tundra and is frozen in the permafrost for thousands of years. It is the tusks of animals that lived during the last Ice Age over 1,200 years ago. After they died their bodies were sometimes frozen in the ground and preserved. I have seen mastodon tusks that have been found as far south as central Mississippi. However, these are not as well preserved as those found in the frozen tundra of Siberia.
As you can see this material makes a beautiful scrimshaw piece. Any drawing can be put on this ivory and the design scratched into the surface. Ink is applied and let to dry. The surface ink is removed leaving only the ink in the lines of the drawing. This art form goes back thousands of years. If you would like a piece of custom jewelry done using your design in scrimshaw on mastodon ivory just send me an email. You will not only have a unique custom piece, but also a slice of history in the jewelry you wear.

I recently bought some fossilized dinosaur coprolite (dung) rough off of Ebay and cut these two designer stones from it today. The piece on the rignt is just over 30mm tall. I had cut two slabs from the rough earlier. This lapidary material is from Utah and is over 150 million years old. It has a nice red and white color pattern with some translucent parts with a little yellow as well. It is fully agatized and very hard. I plan on using it in my custom jewelry designs in the future. I think it adds to custom gemstone jewelry to have a conversation piece stone included in the design. It is not only unique and beautiful jewelry but your own piece of prehistory. On the left is a picture of some uncut rough from the same batch of material. I bought three pieces which weighed 5 1/2 pounds total. I had been waiting for some really good fossilized coprolite rough to show up on Ebay. I bought it from a person I had bought dinosaur material from before.
I enjoy cutting fossilized dinosaur bone as well. I have some examples pictured below. It also is from Utah and comes in many color variations. Dinosaur bone is characterized by the fossilized cell structure visible in the stone. Some types are translucent like the one on the far right and is called "spiderweb" because you can hold it up to the light and see through it.
If you are interested in any of these, or other gemstones, let me know. They can all be set in the unique custom jewelry design of your choice.
